The performance of composite materials is based on
their elastic modulii. Measurement of these is essential for accurate
simulation and modeling. The ETEK is a fast and
efficient system for measuring the important elastic properties of
materials. The elastic and engineering constants of materials, like
those of complex composites, can be determined at ambient and elevated
temperatures. |

The ETEK integrates advanced
ultrasonic instrumentation with temperature control, coupling force, and
sample thickness monitoring to provide an automated system for elastic
constant measurements. By exploiting the fundamental relationship
between sound velocity and elastic constants and engineering constants,
like Young's modulus, the shear modulus and Poisson's ratio can be
determined. ETEK operates at elevated temperatures up
to 600 degrees F (320 degrees C). This advanced ultrasonic system
reduces preparation and test time. ETEK is applicable
to all solids but is optimal for anisotropic composites where the cost
of using conventional methods to measure modulus is prohibitive.
