Recent studies have suggested that
advanced image reconstruction methods could be useful for finding and
imaging steel reinforcement encased in bridges. In a program supported
by the Army Corps of Engineers, IMS conducted several exploratory
ultrasonic studies to develop and demonstrate tomography and synthetic
aperture imaging methods applied to concrete inspection. The
investigations suggest that for concrete, synthetic aperture imaging
methods yield superior image clarity compared with tomography. The
various panels show the test objects and various acoustic images. This
work was carried out in a frequency range from 200 to 500 Khz.
